Fascinating collection of handwritten letters from the Civil War period, twelve total pages, dated between 1861 and 1864. The items vary between brief dispatches relating to military movements and lengthy, affectionate missives between family members. The earliest example, dated April 23, 1861, on Atlantic and Ohio Telegraph Lines letterhead, simply states: “A regiment just left for Chambersburg, D. H. Hastings.” Two letters signed “G. Fenno,” dated January 8, 1863 and March 31, 1863, both relate to his weakened condition due to “chronic dysentery” and the status of his regiment, “Our Reg’t is to day at Camp Moore they have had two skirmishes.” Another lengthier letter from September 22, 1864, penned by a soldier to his wife, mentions health and family and concludes with the line, “Tell John that I want him to vote for honest Abraham Lincoln and Andy Johnson.” In overall very good to fine condition.
