Bernstein was one of the first of the giants of classical music to champion The Beatles and other significant ‘popular music’ of his time; during his 1973 lecture series, The Unanswered Question, Six Talks at Harvard, Bernstein reflected on ‘the bittersweet young cynicism on an album called Revolver,’ and noting that ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ in addition to other Beatles songs, exists as one of the great works of the century.
