Description

Bernstein suggests Mahler, Bach, and The Beatles

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 7.25, personal letterhead, February 8, 1971. Letter to Gary Lorenz, in full: "It is very difficult for me to answer the request in your recent letter, as I do not have any favorites of composers or their works. However, to give you some suggestions for your summer program of your School, I would list the following: Mahler, Symphony, No.9, Bach, The Magnificat, The Beatles Revolver Album, Good luck!" In fine condition. Bernstein was one of the first of the giants of classical music to champion The Beatles and other significant ‘popular music’ of his time; during his 1973 lecture series, The Unanswered Question, Six Talks at Harvard, Bernstein reflected on ‘the bittersweet young cynicism on an album called Revolver,’ and noting that ‘Eleanor Rigby,’ in addition to other Beatles songs, exists as one of the great works of the century.
