During the Spanish-American War, he commanded the Rough Riders, with Theodore Roosevelt as his second-in-command. Scarce DS, one page, 8 x 6, October 5, 1898. In full: "Colonel Cosme de la Torriente, Aide de Camp on the Staff of General Calixto Garcia, is en route to New York and desires to spend some days in Havana. He has presented himself to me and asked me to give him this as a general letter of introduction." Signed prominently at the conclusion by Wood. In very good condition, with splits along intersecting folds, and a trimmed bottom edge. Accompanied by a vintage glossy 3.75 x 4.5 press photo of Wood.
