As Governor and Commander in Chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Sanford Freeman as an "Ensign of a Company in the Fourth Regiment of Infantry in the Second Brigade, and Fifth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Signed in the left border by Gerry, and countersigned by Secretary of the Commonwealth Benjamin Homans. Matted and framed to an overall size of 19.25 x 13.25. Includes a pair of documents signed by James Sullivan and Caleb Strong, as well as three other period Massachusetts documents and an illustrated print of British soldier positions, all of which are individually framed. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and scattered light stains.
