Description

"Those who follow their conscience rightly are of my religion"

LS in French, signed “Henry,” one page, 8.5 x 10.5, circa 1580. Letter to Monsieur de Batz, governor of the city of Eauze in Gascony, explaining his thoughts about his religion. In part (translated): "I have heard with pleasure the services which you and Monsieur de Roquelaure have done to those of religion, and the safety which you have particularly given in your castle of Suberbie to those of my country of Bearn, and also offer that I accept for this time from your said castle…Those who follow their conscience rightly are of my religion, and I am that of all those who are brave and good. With that, I will not make the present longer, except to recommend the place that you have in hand, and to be on your guard, for what can not fail that soon have no noise in the ears." In very good condition, with splitting along intersecting folds, scattered light foxing, and small slits along the side edges.
