Born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti in 1792, he served as pope for a record 31 years, 7 months and 23 days, beginning on June 16, 1846, until his death in 1878. Endorsement on the reverse of an undated letter to Pius IX from the future Bishop of Rieti, one page, 7.75 x 10.75, requesting that he be consecrated on the second Sunday of January by Cardinal Filippo Maria Guida. Endorsed on the reverse in black ink, "Ave 11, Jan. 72…Pius I." In fine condition.
