American sculptor (1850-1931) best known for his monumental historical works, most notably the sculpture that forms the centerpiece of the Lincoln Memorial. Fantastic large 6.5 x 8.75 albumen photo of French's sculpture of John Harvard, signed and inscribed in ink, "To Judge Hoar, With the compliments of Dan. C. French, Concord, Mass, July 1, 1884.” A pencil annotation near the bottom by Roger Sherman Hoar notes, "My father, Sherman Hoar, was the artist model for this statue." In fine condition, with light staining to the image, and a short edge tear to the mount. French presented this inscribed photograph to Judge Ebenezer Rockwood Hoar, US Attorney General and father of Sherman Hoar, the Harvard University student who served as French’s model for the head of the statue. Accompanied by a mammoth 10.25 x 17 mounted portrait of Sherman Hoar by C. M. Bell of Washington, with a note on the reverse by Ellen Hoar Parsons, “My father Sherman Hoar, probably at about the time of his graduation from Harvard." Today, French's statue of John Harvard, the founder of Harvard University, sits in Harvard Yard.
