American writer (1886-1918), best known for the much-anthologized poem 'Trees,' who was killed at the Second Battle of Marne at the age of 31. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 6.75, October 4, 1912. Written from Cragmere, Mahwah, New Jersey, a letter to Stephen Henry Thayer at New York's Authors Club, urging membership for poet Charles Hanson Towne, in full: “Permit me to express my pleasure in seeing, among the names of men nominated for membership in the Club, that of my friend Charles Hanson Towne. Although I know that my opinion is of little weight, I feel that I must take this opportunity to express my hope that the Committee on Membership will admit Mr. Towne to our company. I have read most of his verse, and enjoyed it, and I esteem him as a poet and a gentleman. Let me add, for your guidance in sending out notices of meetings, that my business address is no longer c/o Funk and Wagnall’s Co, but c/o The Churchman, 434 Lafayette St., New York City." In fine condition.
