Description

"I need the money," admits Cain, "for I have taken off for a few months to pound out a book"

American novelist (1892-1977) best known as the author of such crime/noir classics as The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Baltimore Sun letterhead, January 11, 1923. Letter to George Rodney Crowther, in part: “Thank you for your kind word on my piece on radicals…I think there is an element of low comedy about it—for there is no more truth of Russia in the 'radicalism' when you get up close to it than there is of the theory of relativity. And I thank you for your nomination to membership in the Evening Sun bloc. I am not much concerned about the honor, but I need the money, for I have taken off for a few months to pound out a book and expect to be getting hungry around Feb. 1." In very good to fine condition, with paperclip impressions to the upper left, small tears to bottom edge, and overall toning. Interestingly, Cain’s first published work, the short story collection Our Government, was published seven years after this letter.
