Union general (1837-1925) whose cavalrymen, Wilson's Raiders, captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis in May 1865. Scarce ALS signed “J: H. Wilson,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, personal monogrammed letterhead, September 27, 1877. Letter to Major Burns, full: "I am in receipt of your favor of the 25th and hasten to thank you for it. It is pleasant to hear from old Comrades, and to receive their version of the events now fast fading into forgetfulness. I sent you a copy of the paper which contains my article on the Capture of Davis, & hope if you see any inaccuracies therein you will point them out to me. I shall reply more fully to Regan when I get time and may want to quote your letter in part or entire, which I suppose you will not disapprove. If you can get statements from any of the other officers or men, please send them to me. Trusting that you are prospering, I am with kind regards for yourself and 'all the boys.'" Wilson adds a brief postscript. In fine condition, with writing showing through from opposing sides.
