DS, signed “Prince Nelson,” seven pages, 8.5 x 11, July 30, 1981. Participation agreement between Prince's Tionna Music and Dez Dickerson, in which "they shall jointly own…the musical composition entitled 'Cool'…the words and music of which were written or co-written, in whole or in part, by Prince Nelson and Dez Dickerson." Signed at the conclusion in black ballpoint by Prince, and countersigned in blue ballpoint by Dickerson. Stapled to the contract is a one-page Exhibit ‘A’ document issued to the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers, also signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Dickerson. In fine condition. From the collection of an early Prince insider.
Released as a 7″ single in November 1981, 'Cool' was the second single from the self-titled debut album from The Time, an eclectic pop/funk/rock group assembled by Prince earlier that year; the band consisted of several members of existing funk/R&B group Flyte Tyme, as well as other notable Minneapolis musicians. Like most of the album, 'Cool' was recorded in Prince's home studio in April 1981, and was produced, arranged, and performed by Prince, with Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson credited with co-writing the song. Although lead vocal duties belong to Morris Day, Prince's backing vocals can be readily discerned, especially in the chorus.
