Two items: a vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo of Byrd before taking off for the South Pole, holding an American flag and a stone from Floyd Bennett's grave which he dropped at the pole, boldly signed in fountain pen, "R. E. Byrd"; and a TLS signed "R. E. Byrd," one page, 8.5 x 11, July 31, 1935, in full: "I have heard, through Mr. Julian Byrd of your town, that you are much interested in my expeditions. He also informs me that you are collecting autographed photographs, and I am very glad to inclose mine for your collection." The reverse of the photograph bears an affixed caption. In overall fine condition, with edge rippling to the photo, and show-through from old mounting remnants on the reverse of the letter.
