Description

The rare ‘Henry the Sufferer,’ Castile’s short-lived king

King of Castile and Leon who ruled from 1390 until his death at just 27 years old (1379-1406). Manuscript DS in Spanish, signed “Yo el Rey,” one page, 8.75 x 4, September 19, 1392. King Henry confirms the right of Ruy Lopez de Mendoza to wear a sash in acknowledgment of his services rendered to Kings John I and Henry. In very good condition, with paper loss to edges, and archival repair on the reverse to complete separation along the central vertical fold. Henry III, known as 'El Doliente,' was the son of John I and Eleanor of Aragon. His marriage to Catherine of Lancaster (the daughter of John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, and Constance of Castile) brought an end to the decade-old feud between the two dynasties. Despite his short reign, Henry III pursued an aggressive foreign policy and oversaw a powerful navy that won several victories against the English. A sought-after document over six centuries old.
