Description

Politician and financial genius (1761-1849) responsible for the formation of what is now known as the Ways and Means Committee. LS, one page, 7.75 x 6, May 17, 1807. Written from the Treasury Department, in full: "Your letter of the 13th inst. is received. I do not think it proper to give more for the Land on Fair weather Island than it is worth; as it is laying at bad precedent; and if it cannot be obtained for what you think a reasonable price, the purchase may be suspended." Affixed along the right edge to a slightly larger mount. In fine condition, with trimmed edges.
