Description

War-dated ANS in pencil, signed “G. T. B.,” on the reverse of a Southern Telegraph Companies telegram, one page, 8 x 4.25, December 2, 1864. The telegram sent to Beauregard by Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown, in full: "I have no power under the law of this state to make impressments. Can you not order Genl. [Howell] Cobb to make the impressment under the Confederate law." On the reverse, Beauregard writes: "May not go to Augusta. Teleg. to him & to G'l Cobb on the subject." A note in pencil below Beauregard's is in an unknown hand, in part: "As you will go…Augusta, you may get the labor from Col. [William Montague] Browne…Should he not do so, you might with the co-operation of Gov. Brown." In fine condition.
