Description

Zionist leader (1860-1945) who worked for the Jewish Publishing Society of America before she founded Hadassah in 1912. ALS, one page, 5.75 x 9.25, The Jewish Publication Society of America letterhead, May 2, 1898. Letter to Mayer Sulzberger, in full: "At last evening's meeting of the Publication Committee Professor Charles & Norton's letter to Dr. Gross was read, and in consequence of his refusal to undertake the revision of our Bible translation, I was instructed to request you to continue your negotiations with Professor Kittredge and, if possible, secure his co-operation in the Bible work. Enclosed you will find an 'inventory' of our manuscripts, as you requested." In fine condition, with intersecting folds. Sulzberger was an American judge and Jewish communal leader who was one of the founders of the Young Men's Hebrew Association; additionally he served as vice president of the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia, and as chairman of the publication committee of the Jewish Publication Society of America.
