Description

"To predict at this time the outcome of this program would be the same as asking Columbus or the Wright Brothers”

TLS signed “D. K. Slayton,” one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, February 3, 1964. Letter to J. Duane Upton, in part: "Each of us has personal opinions about the space program, but I think all of us will agree that it is without a doubt one of the most challenging of all research projects to which man has committed himself. To ask anyone to predict at this time the outcome of this program would be the same as asking Columbus or the Wright Brothers to predict the significance of their contributions to mankind. Time alone can tell and, as in the past, the benefits derived will be recorded in the pages of our country's history for this unforgettable period." In fine condition. An exceptional letter in which Slayton counts the potential of America's space program among some of the greatest achievements of mankind. From The Bill Lende Collection.
