Very attractive vintage Thor space vehicle display, consisting of models for the Thor Able Star, the Thor Delta, the Thor Able-4, the Thor Agena-B, and a large central Thor rocket, ranging in size from 16″ to 5.25″ in height. Includes the 13.5 x 5 plastic display base. In very good to fine condition, with cracks to the base of each of the smaller rockets, and some scattered wear and scuffs. From the personal collection of Charlie Dry, a former Apollo test astronaut and research engineer and senior scientific analyst at NASA. The Thor rocket was the first in a large family of space launch vehicles that came to be known as Delta, and on August 7, 1959, a Thor-Able was used to successfully launch Explorer 6, the first satellite to transmit pictures of Earth taken from orbit.
