ALS signed “Robert Brownin[g],” one page, 4.25 x 7, November 23, 1889. Letter to Miss Bateman, in part: "I heartily wish I were able to comply with your kind request respecting the Birthday Book which I am sure you have made as attractive as such a compilation can be. Unfortunately my publisher has long ago decided that he ought not to allow the appearance of a work of the kind—proposals to furnish which are frequently made to him—or to myself who am bound to believe in his judgment." In very good to fine condition, with trimmed edges, a tear through the last name, and paper loss to the bottom edge and corner affecting the signature. Accompanied by an ALS by his son, Robert Barrett Browning, dated January 16, 1890, in part: "I hope you will let me thank you, however tardily, for your most kind letter. All you wrote gave me great pleasure, and I am truly grateful for your sympathy." Robert Browning had passed away on December 12, 1889.
