Description

Nathanael Greene makes "preparations for the next Campaign" in 1778

Rare Revolutionary War-dated ALS signed “Nath. Greene,” one page, 9 x 15, December 17, 1778. Written from Camp Middle Brook, a letter to Colonel John Cox, in full: "You may remember I mentioned to you a desire of calling Col. Sheriff from Chester County to Camp. I wish you to consult him upon the subject as soon as possible. Major Forsyth the only acting DQMG in Camp will leave the department very soon to join his Regiment; when ever that takes place the department will be left without a Lead in Camp when ever I am out. I am impatient to get to Philadelphia that some general plan may be fixed upon for the preparations for the next Campaign. The Winter is wearing away and little or nothing doing to affect. Mrs. Greene is arrived in Camp and desires her most respectful to you & family." Greene adds an additional note to the left of his signature: "I have enclosed a copy of a Letter from his Excellency to me in a Letter to Col. Pettit and desir'd him to communicate it to you. I must beg your answer to it immediately." In very good to fine condition, with paper loss to the upper right corner, and areas of light toning.
