ALS signed “Astrid,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, no date. Letter to Millie Sutcliffe, the mother of original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, in full [spelling and grammar retained]: “I hope you can still read my letter! It is very difficult for me to write in bed wat else can I tell you? I have not tell you much any way but that is the thing with me mum I am a bit stupid, but I know that you don’t care if I am stupid or not, is that right? So how are my sisters? I hope they soon feel like writing to me. Tell Pauline George sings a lovely song from Joe Brown ‘A Pictures of You’ and John sings ‘Love is a swinging thing.’ And money the both very good songs I like them. On other on George sings ‘Open your loving arms’ is lovely too. So that is the rock-information from Hamburg-city for today. I think that it all for today mum look after your selfe and go to the doctor with that boil! Ceep warm! Love and three little kisses…love to Joice and Pauline.” At the conclusion Kirchherr draws sketches of whiskey, two biscuits, the sun over a cloud, and a small Valentine adding inside: “Astrid loves Stuart forever.” On the first page she draws a picture of herself in bed next to a side table with flowers, “Me and my beautiful smelly flowers!” In fine condition. Along with her companions Klaus Voormann and Jurgen Vollmer, Kirchherr was a principal photographer of the Beatles during their early days in Hamburg. She was introduced to the group at the Kaiserkeller bar in August 1960, and soon became romantically involved with Sutcliffe. The two became engaged in November and, less than a year later, Sutcliffe left the band to focus on his artwork. While living with the Kirchherr family in Hamburg, Sutcliffe suffered from severe headaches and, after dismissing a medical trip to Britain as unnecessary, he succumbed to a ruptured aneurysm on April 10, 1962.
