Description

Two identical large swatches of the ivory-colored silk taffeta used in making Princess Diana's wedding dress, measuring an overall 47 x 11.5 (with a rectangular section cut out of one corner), pinned together at one edge. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a page removed from the 2006 book A Dress for Diana by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, showing the silk as used in the dress. The silk for Diana's dress was ordered in two colors—white and ivory—in order to keep the final shade of the dress a secret from even the weavers. It was this classic ivory color that was ultimately chosen, and the special taffeta was produced in a heavier weight than usual to help give Diana's dress its distinctive shape. The taffeta was woven by Stephen Walters, an established silk weaving company that had done the lining for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation gown and the wedding dress of Princess Anne.
