Exerting his influence for a widow “whose husband fell in battle”

ALS signed "Sam'l F. B. Morse," one page, 8.25 x 10.5, January 11, 1848. Letter to Secretary of the Treasury Robert J. Walker. In part: "This will be handed you estimable friend Mrs. Col. Thompson, whose husband fell in battle in the service of his country. She intercedes for a brother in New York, whom I have the pleasure of personally knowing, and can testify to his high and excellent character for probity, industry, and Christian principle." Also endorsed on the reverse by John A. Dix and Thomas H. Benton. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), toned tape affixed to the top edge, and show-through from tape repairs to some separations.
