Description

"I appreciate your interpretation of my 'Hercule Poirot'"

ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.75, Ashfield letterhead, December 10 [no year, but likely 1930]. Letter to Mr. Sullivan, in part: "I feel I must write you a few lines to tell you how very much I appreciate your interpretation of my 'Hercule Poirot.' I really had not time to say all I meant in the excitement on Monday night! But I am really most grateful!…I am sending you my latest, 'Murder at the Vicarage' though from what I have seen of the Embassy it seems that none of you could ever have time for light reading!" In very good condition, with moderate overall creasing and scattered staining. This letter was almost certainly sent to Francis L. Sullivan, a well known stage actor of the time. In 1930, he was appearing as Hercule Poirot in Christie's first play, Black Coffee, staged at the Embassy Theatre in Swiss Cottage, London. Christie's novel The Murder at the Vicarage—referenced here as her "latest"—was also published in 1930.
