Description

"I realized what a mess Castro could make even out of good Havana tobacco"

Humorous TLS signed “Dick,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, August 18, 1965. Letter to Paul W. Keyes, in full: "A few days ago a friend gave me a box of Havana cigars which he had purchased in London at a cost of approximately $1.00 each. After trying one, I realized what a mess Castro could make even out of good Havana tobacco. Since you, however, are a better judge of cigars than I am, I am sending the box on to you with the hope that your evaluation of cigars under communism will not be as low as mine." In fine condition. Keyes was a loyal Republican and longtime friend of Nixon's who occasional wrote jokes for his speeches. Additionally, Keyes was the head writer of the popular sketch comedy show Laugh-In, which Nixon famously appeared on during his 1968 presidential campaign. His single line—‘Sock it to me?’—did much to reshape his public perception.
