French film director and writer (1920-2010) who is remembered for New Wave films like My Night at Maud's, Claire's Knee, and The Green Ray; deemed by critics as 'the most durable film-maker of the French New Wave.' ALS in French, one page, 8.25 x 11.75, Les Films du Losange letterhead, October 31, 1978. Letter to Stanley Hochman, in full (translated): "I thought for a moment that we could add at the end of our 'Hitchcock' the review that I had written on 'Vertige' [Vertigo] for Cahiers du Cinema [Notebook on Cinema]. After reading that one over, I find that it brings nothing essential to our study and that it might destroy the fragile unity of the work. I think that the best is to publish it as is without preface nor postface at all." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in his own hand.
