German naturalist and explorer (1769-1859) who wrote Kosmos, a massive five-volume study which attempted to unify the various branches of man’s knowledge. Amusing ALS in French, signed “A. v. Humboldt,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, no date. Humboldt writes that he was looking for the works of Frederick the Great, but lost them amongst his Kosmic papers ("papiers 'cosmiques'"). In fine condition. A fascinating letter alluding to his magnum opus Kosmos.
