Excellent ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7 x 8.75, May 5, 1844. Letter to Theodore Sedgwick, in part: "I have delayed too long my response to your favor of May 22nd…Pigeon is not for sale in Boston; but I think Mr. Rand owns it. That is also in the Law Library at Cambridge…It appears that a foreign judgment is examinable in our court…but the cases leave it doubtful to what extent. I am sorry you do not furnish Chandler a notice, to keep me in countenance, in my sketches of Maine & N. Hampshire. You are too ambitious. Because you have not time to write an article, you will not condescend to a notice. All who read your articles on Texas admire their vigor, independence & argument. You have done a real service to a good cause. What say you to locofocoism? Can you feel any interest in a contest under Polk?—Our arms are open, to receive you into the fellowship that supports law, order, peace, good government, the overthrow of selfishness & the establishment of a standard of practical action with a view to the public good, & not to the interests of individuals in a faction. Join us!" Addressed on the reverse of the second integral page by Sumner. In fine condition, with an unobtrusive tear to the hinge and seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf.
