Rare 1801 Monroe appointment taken as a Civil War trophy

Partly-printed DS, signed “Jas. Monroe,” one page, 7.75 x 10.75, June 20, 1801. As governor of Virginia, Monroe appoints John Doswell "to be sheriff…for the said County of Nottoway." Signed at the conclusion by Governor Monroe. A later ink notation below reads, in part: "Taken from Robt. Bolling's library 3 hours after evacuation of Petersburg. Presented to W. E. McCormick." In good to very good condition, with splitting to folds, areas of paper loss to edges, and mottled overall staining. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from Beckett Authentication Services.
