Description

Prominent lawyer in colonial Philadelphia (1676?1741) remembered for his victory on behalf of the printer and newspaper publisher John Peter Zenger in a case which helped to establish that truth is a defense to an accusation of libel. ADS, signed ?A: Hamilton,? one page both sides, 8.25 x 13, March 6, 1730. Lengthy autograph legal document, in part: "And by the said articles it is agreed that the conveyance of the premises by the said Sr. Wid to the said John England shall be in Trust for the uses in the articles aforesaid and especially that if ye said John shall not within ye time limited in the Articles find a sufficient Quantity of Iron Ore for carrying on the said Works and shall be willing to reconvey ye said Land." In very good to fine condition, with archival tape repair to complete separation to the central vertical fold.
