Admiral Porter’s “careful survey on all the Gun Carriages of the ‘Constitution’”

Collection of four items, consisting of letters and documents related to the US Navy during the mid-19th century: a DS signed “David D. Porter,” one page, 7.75 x 12.5, December 16, 1857, in part: “Agreeable to your order, we have held a strict and careful survey on all the Gun Carriages of the ‘Constitution.’ They are in our opinion unfit for service from decay in the wood and in want of repair”; an ALS signed “James Renshaw,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 17, 1821, concerning the transfer of seamen from the “Schooner Porpoise” to the “Frigate Constitution”; a manuscript document sent to Captain John Porter, one page, 8 x 9.5, April 29, 1820, recommending repair of “the interior of the Powder Magazine”; and an LS signed “John Rodgers,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, US Navy Yard, Boston letterhead, September 24, 1868, recommending the dispatch of the tug boats USS Leyden and USS Palos. In overall fine condition.
