Very early 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of a young George V in a seated pose and wearing a naval uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink, "November 14th, 1879, George, Gibra[l]tar." Published by the W & D. Downey Studio in London. In very good to fine condition, with a crease to the upper right corner and scattered overall speckled foxing. Along with his elder brother Albert Victor, George entered the navy in 1877, and by 1879 both were assigned to the HMS Bacchante as part of a squadron designed to patrol the sea lanes of the British Empire for the next three years. An exceedingly early and uncommon example, portraying the future king as a 14-year-old midshipman.
