Description

Wally Pipp

Unsigned original pearl-finish 6.5 x 10 Newspaper Enterprise Association press photo of Wally Pipp following through on a swing, stamp-dated September 30, 1920, on the reverse. Encapsulated in a plastic PSA/DNA authentication holder certifying it as a Type I original news service photograph. In fine condition, with light surface impressions from notations on the reverse. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. Pipp, the New York Yankees first baseman from 1915 to 1925, is best known as the man who lost his job to Lou Gehrig. On June 2, 1925, Pipp took a day off due to a headache and was replaced by a young Gehrig—who then went on to play in 2,130 consecutive games.
