In 1943, the famous aviator was in the Pacific as a civilian to observe fighter tactics with the 475th AAF Group. On August 1 he participated in a mission over Palau led by double-ace Col. Charles MacDonald when their P-38s encountered enemy aircraft. One of the Zeros homed in on Lindbergh’s plane and only a long shot by MacDonald forced him off. For allowing Lindbergh to fly in actual combat, MacDonald was ordered back to the States temporarily, but the two men remained lifelong friends. Lindbergh’s account of the action appears on pages 890–893 of this book. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
