In 1943, the famous aviator was in the Pacific as a civilian to observe fighter tactics with the 475th AAF Group. On August 1 he participated in a mission over Palau led by double-ace Col. Charles MacDonald when their P-38s encountered enemy aircraft. One of the Zeros homed in on Lindbergh’s plane and only a long shot by MacDonald forced him off. For allowing Lindbergh to fly in actual combat, MacDonald was ordered back to the States temporarily, but the two men remained lifelong friends.
