German singer and actress (1906–1937) who was immensely popular in the early 1930s. Her sudden death at the age of 31 was initially attributed to epilepsy, but after the end of World War II, witnesses suggested that she had been murdered by Gestapo officers after she refused to appear in Nazi propaganda films.
