Description

Arbuckle less than a month after the 1921 Rappe incident

Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 seated portrait of Arbuckle, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Madeline and Claude, With all my Love and sincere Best wishes, Roscoe, San Francisco, Oct. 23rd, 1921.” Also signed in pencil by the photographer. Pencil notation on reverse reads, “Taken in his suite in Paris in 1920.” In very good to fine condition, with creasing and soiling to the borders, missing lower right corner, and mounting remnants to reverse. On September 5, 1921, Arbuckle took a break from a hectic film schedule to drive to San Francisco with two friends and entertain guests in a private hotel suite. Among those in attendance was Virginia Rappe, whose tragic death four days later placed Arbuckle as the main witness. He was arrested and charged with manslaughter, with his first trial starting on November 14, 1921, less than a month after signing this image. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
