Description

Fred Allen

Five TLSs signed in pencil, one signed “Mr. A” and four signed “F,” totaling nine pages on five sheets, circa mid-1930s. Interesting collection of letters concerning show business. One, in part (spelling and grammar corrected): “Jack Benny’s second picture opens at the Astor this week. It was mentioned for the Capitol but Mutiny on the Bounty goes in there. I guess Tone and Gable must have pulled strings.” Another, in part: “The picture is held over a third week at the center and the business has been very good. We finally saw it and my reaction was about as you predicted. I thought I looked like a gargoyle in a lot of the shots and to me, knowing the story routine, it looked as though the picture had been cut by a rabbi. It seemed to jump from one bit to another without any development or without smoothness and plot exposition. Everyone seems to like it and the notices were excellent in the papers and perhaps I am wrong but to me it didn’t look so hot.” A third, in part: “We went to see the preview of Coronado Tuesday night. We didn’t get to the theatre until ‘Millions in the Air’ was finishing. I don’t know what this picture was about but at the finish the audience hissed. Knowing the Coronado story I had grave doubts as to the outcome before a midnight audience at the Paramount but order was restored and the picture got under way.” In overall very good to fine condition, with a block of light toning to one of the letters.
