Description

Edmond Rostand

French poet and dramatist (1868–1918) best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, no date. Letter to a colleague, in part (translated): "Here is the [theatre] box for tomorrow, Friday. Are you indeed in Paris?…Did you get what you were asking for? You neglected to tell me who I should talk to (because I have no connection at all in the military), and the reason I should invoke. If you still want to be exempted from those exercises (I am told it would have been easy to get you an exemption for the 28 days), I must be told what officer I should write to, and what pretext to use—because your size and physical appearance must make you, without any attempt at flattery, an excellent candidate…If you want and can tell me what I should say, I will take a chance and write to the chief…to explain who you are and the high esteem in which you are held by the world of literature.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
