Inscribed in the handwriting of Mitchell on the first free end page in black ink, "To Gov. Anthony, of the Providence Journal, With the compliments of the Author, New York, 2nd Dec. 1850." The second and third free end pages bear a lovely signed ink sketch of a woman by Edmund W. Ashe, as well as a tipped-in ALS from F. O. C. Darley to artist and librarian Charles Lanman. In very good to fine condition. A classic, highly sought-after title, this presentation copy exists as one of only two known examples.
