Belgian-born American author and illustrator (1898–1962) best known for his now-classic series of Madeleine children’s books. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 9.25, August 23, 1939. Letter to Miss Laura Hale, in part: “We have found an isle forgotten, so remote and in isolation that not even the takeoff of the Lindberg Lockheed or the pumping of Dr. Carrels artificial heart disturb it…I think there is another childrens book in one of these boats and in the fish…May I remind you of my python, I would like to collect for the animal, as soon as is possible, please send it to Vogue.” At the end, Bemelmans has drawn an ink and watercolor snake and envelope. Also includes the original mailing envelope addressed in Bemelmans’s hand, incorporating his last name in the return address area and adding a sketch of a smiling sun. In very good to fine condition, with areas of irregular light toning to both the letter and its envelope. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
