Description

A day before leaving his post as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

TLS signed “Omar N. Bradley,” two pages, 7 x 10.25, Joint Chiefs of Staff letterhead, August 14, 1953. Thoughtful letter to R. J. ‘Mac’ McDuff, in part: “I can’t say farewell to the one officer on my staff who is continuing to operate my official office in the Pentagon, but as I leave active service, except for the responsibilities that you will take care of for me, it is appropriate that I put down for the record an expression of my deep and sincere appreciation for your outstanding service to me ever since February, 1948, when I became Chief of Staff of the Army. I am especially fortunate in having added to my staff a man who has served General Eisenhower in World War II and in the Chief of Staff job—a man of your ability and thorough knowledge, and good judgment. And when I asked you to continue to serve with me when I took over the job as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, your careful planning organized my new office so well that in four years we have never had to change it, and it has been a most efficient operation.” In fine condition, with somewhat irregular toning to the first page. Bradley left his post as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on August 15, 1953, and was succeeded by Arthur W. Radford. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
