Description

Thoughts on space exploration from seven of NASA’s bravest

Uncommon grouping of TLSs from seven astronauts, each one page, 8 x 10.5, NASA letterhead, dated between 1963 and 1983, each addressed to J. Duane Upton. Signers include: John Glenn, Rusty Schweickart, Charles Conrad, Edgar Mitchell, Tom Stafford, Jack Lousma, and Ron Evans. The Schweickart letter, in part: “It seems to me that our program of space exploration makes two important contributions to our life on this planet…it has given us a new view of this small, beautiful, blue planet on which we all live…our program of space exploration has given us a new vision of the realm of exploration.” A letter from Conrad, in part: “The successful orbital flights have opened the door to explorations outside the confines of the earth. The mind can only guess at a small fraction of the benefits to mankind that will come from the peaceful exploration of our universe.” The Mitchell letter, in part: “The attainment of knowledge through exploration—through research—has always brought benefits even though the final outcome could not be defined. This is no less true with manned space exploration than with other means of searching for knowledge.” A letter from Stafford, in part: The apollo program is the greatest peacetime undertaking in the history of man. It will advance our knowledge in all basic scientific fields and will help us understand more about the origin of the universe.” Also includes a statement regarding space exploration, signed at the conclusion by Glenn, “This is probably the greatest exploration that man has ever attempted.” In overall fine condition. A fascinating collection of missives written by astronauts from the first four NASA programs—Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab. Pre-certified Zarelli Space Authentication.
