Samuel Cooper

Highest-ranking Confederate general (1798–1876) during the Civil War. Two items: an LS signed “S. Cooper,” one page, lightly lined, 7.75 x 10, Adjutant General’s Office letterhead, October 5, 1853, in full: “You are informed, in reply to your inquiry of the 1st instant, that the Rolls of the War of 1812 are not deposited in the War Department. They are in the Treasury Department, Third Auditor’s Office”; and a page of the General Orders of the War Department, No. 4, 4.75 x 7.75, signed at the conclusion in black ink, “S. Cooper.” Collector’s ink notation at the top of the General Orders date the signature to March 21, 1854. In overall fine condition, with light toning and edge trimming to the General Orders.
