Description

Thomas Hart Benton

Longtime senator of Missouri (1782—1858) who was a strong advocate of westward expansion of the United States. ALS signed “Thomas H. Benton,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, October 31, 1839. Letter to Judge Law, in part: “I have the satisfaction to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter, and have on hesitation in recommending you to have the Salt movement conducted wholly by our friends. Let the federalists oppose it if they dare. I should thank them for their custom if they did; but some of them will not. Let it therefore be pushed wholly by our friends, and let the rest do as they please, or as they dare. It is a growing question every where, and all that we have got to do is to stick to it. The Thirty queries which I sent to my constituents are receiving full attention, and I am already receiving omnipotent answers.” Benton signs his name again on the free frank addressed on the reverse of the second integral page. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and soiling to the integral free-franked address leaf. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
