Description

Intellectuals

Three items signed by early modern figures of the arts and sciences, all of whom became embroiled in controversy over the treatment of Jesus Christ in their works, including: a limited edition hardcover of The Brook Kerith, with slipcase, numbered 152/375, signed on the colophon in ink by Irish realist George Moore and illustrator Stephen Gooden; an AQS by French philosopher and philologist Ernest Renan, in full (translated): "Every day do the good that you can in it“; and an ALS by Scottish social anthropologist and early mythographer James George Frazer, signed “J. G. Frazer,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 3.5, personal letterhead, April 19, 1917. In part: “I thank you for your kindness in sending me your notes on ‘Balder’ [a Norse god]. I was not acquainted with the interesting details you give as to the ‘Palio’ at Siena. You may be right in your suggestion as to the horse-shoeing of the poor woman, but after all it is perhaps more likely that it was merely a ruffian’s brutal jest.” In overall fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
