Description

Two letters: an LS by Charles de La Croix de Castries, signed "le Mal. De Castries," one page, 8 x 12.5, September 7, 1785, in part (translated): "I have received, Sir, the letter you did me the honor of writing on behalf of the Chevalier de Galaup, asking for anticipated payment of the second half of his salary...This request is absolutely contrary to the established Rules...I beg you to be persuaded of how much I regret not being able to make an exception in the case of your brother-in-law. Such an exception would have consequences"; and an LS by Charles Louis Fouquet, signed "Louis duc de Belleisle," one page both sides, 8 x 11.5, May 24, 1760, in part (translated): "In one of your letters you insist that Captains de Joinville and d'Allemand be dismissed from the Corps which you command because they encouraged a spirit on indiscipline and insubordination...In your second letter you indicate that their apologies and the one month they spent in prison are enough punishment...a strong letter of condemnation has already been sent and should be effective for your purposes." In overall fine condition.
