Richard Varick

American soldier and statesman (1753–1831) who was aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold prior to the latter’s defection to the British. Varick later served as Washington’s private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Manuscript DS, signed “Rich’d Varick Mayor,” one page, 8 x 12.5, August 17, 1790. Legal testimony in the case of the People of New York v. James Reid. In part: “William Ackley…being duly sworn maketh oath that last Evening about eight of the Clock, he saw James Reid of the Constables of this City have hold of Elizabeth Gassner…that upon hearing her Scream he went up to the said James Reid to inquire into the Cause…Reid said he had a warrant…the Deponent inquired the name of the Person against whom the warrant was issued, which the said James Reid refused to mention.” In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
