American statesman (1782–1866) who served variously as governor of Michigan, senator, ambassador to France, secretary of war, and secretary of state. ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, January 20, 1853. Letter to writer and editor Sarah Josepha Hale, best known for penning the nursery rhyme ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb,’ thanking her for sending a publication. In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
