Politician, lawyer, and military leader (1811–1861) who was killed in action at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, becoming the only sitting senator killed during the Civil War. Civil War–dated twice-signed manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, October 12, 1861. Document concerning the disbursement of funds from the estate of Captain James W. Lingenfelter, including payment for “Coffin, Grave Digging, etc.,” signed once in pencil, “Approved, E. D. Baker, Col. Com. Brigade,” and once in ink, “E. D. Baker, Col. Com. Brigade.” In very good to fine condition. Captain Lingenfelter, the first Oregonian to die in the Civil War, had been shot in the head by a Confederate sharpshooter while on picket duty on September 21st. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
